3.5-Tonne Isuzu Grafters Pull Sanitation Duty At Challenger Site Services

Portable toilet provider Challenger Site Services has just acquired its 10th light-duty Isuzu Grafter rigid truck, with four more slated for delivery later in 2022. The Greater Manchester company purchased the 3.5-tonne (3.9-U.S.-ton) gross vehicle weight (GVW) cab and chassis trucks from dealer Ditchburn Truck Services, including seven in just the last 12 months.

    Reliable Versatility

Challenger uses its trucks to supply sanitation facilities to the building and construction industry, as well as water delivery and waste tank emptying. Its latest three Isuzu Grafters are its first with the Easyshift automatic gearbox option. Two of the trucks are built on an N35.125TA SWB short wheelbase chassis and are equipped with bespoke GK&N Services tanker bodies with a dividing baffle that can hold either 1,100 litres (290 gallons) of waste or 900 L (238 gal) of fresh water safely within a single barrel. The third Grafter has a N35.125T LWB long wheelbase chassis and a six-toilet transport body from Fosters Commercials.

“The trucks servicing our portable toilet division are worked really hard as we have over 1,500 individual site visits to complete every week,” says Challenger Site Services partner Shaun Allen. “We have found that the Isuzu Grafter is a more robust and solid truck, which is very reliable in service. The short wheelbase Grafter in particular gives us excellent access at the smaller, more compact building sites, which is enormous help for when these tanker trucks are servicing our portable toilets.”

“The flexibility and versatility of the Isuzu Grafter chassis in the building and construction industry is second to none at the 3.5-t GVW,” says Stuart Beeton, head of sales, product, and marketing at Isuzu Truck UK. “At Challenger, this versatility comes into its own, as the Grafter chassis in their fleet feature a selection of different bespoke bodies to meet their demanding operational requirements.”

Challenger expects to run its Grafters for around 25,000 miles each year for five years.

    The Isuzu Grafter

Isuzu sells the Grafter rigid as a chassis cab, dropside, or tipper truck, all with a day cab. It comes in two wheelbases, 2,500 and 3,360 millimetres (98 and 132 inches), and with either single or twin rear wheels. The truck’s lighter chassis now allows for up to 1,750 kilograms (3,858 pounds) of body and payload in the case of the single-rear wheel, short-wheelbase, chassis cab configuration.

The Grafter also benefits from a new engine, transmission, and suspension. Its 1.9-L, four-cylinder Isuzu diesel engine supplies 87 kilowatts (118 horsepower) and 320 newton-metres (236 pound-force feet) of torque while adhering to the Euro 6 emissions standard.

Besides the optional Easyshift automatic gearbox mentioned above, the Grafter is also available with a six-speed manual transmission. The truck has an independent front axle and a steel suspension all around.
