Since introducing the Lion’s City E bus in 2020, MAN Truck & Bus has taken over 700 orders for the battery-powered bus, including a recent order of 53 from Hamburg. Of the more than 2,400 MAN city buses sold in the last fiscal year, 5.5% of them were Lion’s City E. MAN buses represent the third-largest number of eBuses registered in Germany in 2021 and that number is set to grow.

“By 2025, half of our new city buses will be alternatively powered,” says Head of Business Unit Bus at MAN Truck & Bus, Rudi Kuchta. “And we expect that just five years later, in 2030, 90% of our city buses will be battery-powered."

    Europe Goes Electric

Hamburg isn’t alone in turning to eBuses. VAG Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg has 39 already in service, and this autumn 15 eBuses will run standard bus routes in Zurich, Switzerland. Copenhagen has 25 Lion's City 12 E buses serving its central bus route and Danish company VIKINGBUS recently received 12 eBuses in Odder. Sweden has 75 of the buses on order to be used in Gothenburg and Stockholm, and another 12 will soon begin operation in Uppsala. Malmö already has 22 Lion's City E buses at work.

"There is enormous international interest in forward-looking drive technology," says Kuchta.

The emission-free buses have a range of up to 550 kilometres on a single charge and can carry up to 88 passengers on a solo bus or up to 130 on an articulated bus. (Photo courtesy of MAN.)

About The MAN Lion’s City E

MAN’s 12-metre (39-foot) Lion’s City 12 E solo buses began series production in October 2020 in Starachowice, Poland, and the 18-m (59-ft) Lion’s City 18 E articulated bus started series production in April 2021. The solo bus can hold up to 88 passengers while the articulated bus can carry as many as 130. The buses use a central motor on the rear axle on the solo model and two central motors on the second and third axles on the articulated model. The all-electric powertrain gets energy from batteries on the roof that will provide a range of up to 350 kilometres (217 miles) throughout their entire service life before factoring in regenerative braking, which extends their range to 550 km (342 mi) on a single charge.
