MJ Hughes Adds First MirrorCam-Equipped Truck, An 8x2 Arocs, To 100% Mercedes-Benz Fleet

Structural steel specialist MJ Hughes of Yorkshire has operated Mercedes-Benz trucks since 2012, when it purchased an Axor eight-wheeler. Although still reliable, the Axor’s lack of Euro 5 compliance precluded it from operating in London. As such, MJ Hughes recently replaced the Axor with a brand-new 8x2 Arocs 3245 specified with Mercedes-Benz’s MirrorCam and the full complement of cameras to deliver 360-degree visibility. The Arocs is MJ Hughes’ first truck with MirrorCam, which has received an enthusiastic thumbs-up from driver Leejay Neale.

“MirrorCam is absolutely brilliant,” Neale says. “This is the first time I’ve used it and the all-round visibility is a lot better than I was expecting. I’m on and off tight sites all the time, and being able to see so much more of what’s around you makes the job a lot easier—and safer.”

Made For On- & Off-Road Manoeuvrability

MJ Hughes configured the new Arocs with a rear axle that can be lifted when transporting light loads, which reduces tyre wear, and the truck’s 8x2 configuration enhances manoeuvrability while also making it more fuel-efficient than an 8x4 32-tonne (35.2-U.S.-ton) truck. The rugged Arocs chassis also provides MJ Hughes with the versatility to drive over all types of terrain.

“Our vehicles can spend as much time on rough sites as they do on the road, so the extra ground clearance you get with the Arocs is a big advantage,” says MJ Hughes’ Plant & Transport Manager Chris Hall. “It offers a good body and payload allowance, and as a purpose-designed construction chassis is ideally suited to our work.”

“When you’re at the wheel it’s more like being in an upmarket car than a truck. I love it,” says driver Leejay Neale. (Photo courtesy of Mercedes-Benz.)

    All-Around Visibility, Superior Functionality

Mercedes-Benz MirrorCam technology sends images from the roof-mounted cameras to screens located on the A-pillars in the cab, and without the large mirrors on the side of cab, drivers have better visibility in front and to the side. Inside the cab, Neale appreciates the Multimedia Cockpit that gives him access to key functions from twin screens rather than using traditional switchgear.

“It’s a great design, and very easy to use,” says Neale. “When you’re at the wheel it’s more like being in an upmarket car than a truck. I love it.”
