5-Star London DVS Rating Makes Mercedes-Benz Econic The Right Choice For Relocation Specialist

“Our business is still booming and the Econic adds another, important string to our bow,” says Managing Director Matthew de-Machen. “Matthew James’ investment in this vehicle reflects our strong commitments to compliance and to the safety, not only of colleagues, but also of other, vulnerable road users.” (Photo courtesy of Mercedes-Benz.)

The Mercedes-Benz Econic is often chosen by local authorities and waste specialists for its enhanced visibility from the cab. Drivers sit much lower in the Econic than in a conventional truck, and with a bus-style folding nearside door, drivers are able to see pedestrians and crew when working in urban environments. The Econic’s direct visibility was also a major selling point for global relocations specialist Matthew James, which selected a 4x2 1830 L powered by a 300-horsepower (220-kilowatt) engine.

“It’s easy to make a compelling business case for operation of the Econic in and around London,” says Managing Director Matthew de-Machen. “As well as leading the field in terms of direct visibility, its big, airy cab can accommodate a team of porters, which means we don’t have to send them out in a second vehicle.”

    Fit For The Fleet

A wide selection of trucks comprises Matthew James’ 40-vehicle fleet, including five Mercedes-Benz 26-tonne (28.7-U.S.-ton) Actros LnR models with low frames and pantechnicon bodies provided by Rygor Commercials. The new Econic is from the same supplier, who worked with SBR Specialist Coachbuilders to fit a storage box behind the cab and in front of a platform equipped with twist locks to secure ISO shipping containers. The firm’s porters are able to quickly load and unload containers using the trucks’ ramp system. Hall’s Electric also fitted each truck with a 360-degree camera system, further simplifying the unloading process and improving visibility.

    The Econic Range

The Econic’s Euro 6, 7.7-litre engine is available in power ratings from 300 to 345 HP (272 kW). The newest Matthew James truck is an 18-t (19.8-U.S.-t), two-axle configuration; the Econic is also available in multiple 26-t three-axle variants. Wheelbases are available from 3.45 to 5.7 metres (11.3 to 18.7 feet), and buyers can specify electrohydraulically steered leading or trailing axles. Each of its axles has a full air suspension that is height-adjustable from -50 to +160 millimetres (-2 to +6.3 inches).
