Hungarian Logistics Firm Adds First Electric Heavy-Duty Truck—A DAF CF Electric—To Its Fleet

DAF recently delivered its first CF Electric truck to Central Europe, sending a 4x2 tractor unit to leading Hungarian logistics provider Waberer’s. The CF Electric is Waberer’s first fully electric heavy-duty distribution vehicle and will initially transport goods in and around Budapest, logging roughly 500 kilometres (310 miles) per day. Waberer’s, which provides both domestic and international transport, also recently ordered 450 DAF New Generation XF trucks as part of its efforts to minimise its environmental footprint.

“We have decided to embark on the path of going green,” says Waberer’s board member Barna Erdélyi. “Our fleet expansion is the next milestone on this route, and this fully electric vehicle will not be the last. Waberer’s is committed to delivering durable and sustainable logistics solutions. Fully electrical trucks offer an opportunity for the transportation sector to play its part in dealing with the challenges of global warming and local air quality.”

    An Integrated Solution

With the delivery of a CF Electric to Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo in 2018, DAF says it was the first European truck manufacturer to introduce a fully electric distribution truck. The company says it developed the CF Electric in response to the transportation sector’s increasing demand for better air quality and lower carbon dioxide emissions. DAF also offers the CF Electric as a 6x2 rigid.

“DAF has been supplying fully electric trucks for years, resulting in a vast real-life experience,” says Richard Zink, DAF director of marketing and sales and a member of DAF’s Board of Management. “In addition to helping our customers to find the right electric truck for their specific application, we also offer them an integrated solution, including efficient charging systems and advanced route-simulation programmes to optimise the company’s day-to-day business.”

    The DAF CF Electric

The 4x2 configuration of the CF Electric has a gross combination weight (GCW) of 37 tonnes (41 U.S. tons), and a 3,800-millimetre (150-inch) wheelbase. The 6x2 configuration has a GVW of 29 t (32 U.S. t), and wheelbase options that range from 3,800 to 4,800 cm (189 in.).

The truck has a single-charge driving range of 250 km (155 miles), but DAF says this can vary depending on application, load, and driving conditions. The CF Electric’s VDL 210-kilowatt (240-kW peak power) electric motor delivers 2,000 newton-metres (1,475 pounds-foot) of torque. Its 350-kilowatt-hour (315-kWh effective) battery pack can recharge as quickly as 75 minutes when connected to a 250-kW charging station.
