Motivated partially by its drivers’ positive feedback, Scottish scaffolding firm Northern Platforms & Stagings recently added a new 7.5-tonne (8.3-U.S.-ton) Mercedes-Benz Atego 816 to its fleet. Equipped with a ClassicSpace S cab and a smooth-shifting PowerShift 3 automated transmission, the Atego is transporting tubes, boards, and other equipment in the Grampian region. Northern Platforms & Stagings provides scaffolding services to local builders and construction firms and to customers in the petrochemical and marine engineering sectors.

“We’ve been running Mercedes-Benz vehicles for well over 10 years and have never had any problems with them,” says founder and Managing Director John Johnston. “The fact that they don’t let us down means they make a valuable contribution to the efficiency of our operation.”

    Reassuring Performance

BLS Truck & Van of Aberdeen supplied the Atego, the fourth vehicle it has handed over to Northern Platforms & Stagings since becoming a Three-Pointed Star dealer in 2018. Advance Commercial Bodies of West Yorkshire built the Atego’s platform body. The truck is powered by a 5.1-litre, 156-horsepower (115-kilowatt) engine compliant with Stage 5 emissions regulations.

“The Atego is entirely fit for purpose,” Johnston says. “It’s the right size and carries the weight well, while the guys like their trucks because they’re so comfortable. As a business with an unwavering commitment to health and safety and compliance, we’re also reassured by the knowledge that Mercedes-Benz Trucks leads the field when it comes to the protection not only of those who use its vehicles, but also of other road users.”

    A Light-Duty Distribution Specialist

The Atego ClassicSpace S-cab is 2,295 millimetres (90.4 inches) wide and 1,650 mm (65 in.) long, allowing it to easily navigate spaces like narrow alleys and backyards, Mercedes-Benz says. Extended ClassicSpace S-cab, ClassicSpace L cab, and BigSpace L cab options are also available. Cockpit options includes Classic, Comfort, and Standard variants. The interior includes such amenities as a multifunction steering wheel with eight control buttons, a 5-in. instrument cluster with video functionality, and options for a radio with USB and Bluetooth connectivity and air-conditioned suspension seating.

Mercedes-Benz says PowerShift 3 makes the Atego easy to manoeuvre, with superior dynamic response, simple handling, and low fuel consumption. A manual transmission with pneumatic power-assisted gear shifting is also available. Engine power options range from 156 to 299 HP (115 to 220 kW) and Atego gross vehicle weights (GVW) range from 7.5 to 16 t (17.6 U.S. t).
