K1 Logistics of South Wales has received six new Volvo FH 460 6x2 tractor units following a recent trial of a similarly specified FH that was provided by Truck and Bus Wales and West.

“Reduced carbon footprint and improved operational efficiency are two goals that rarely go hand-in-hand, hence why we were so impressed with the results the I-Save, I-Shift, I-See package combination produced,” says K1 Logistics Managing Director Kurt Evans. “During our trial, we saw significant fuel savings which we project could yield a £10,000 annual cost saving per truck compared to the older vehicles we have on the fleet. When we tested an alternative unit from another manufacturer it simply could not come close to those figures.”

    I Before E-fficiency

Volvo developed its I-Save technology to increase fuel efficiency and lower fuel costs for long-haul truckers and fleets. The D13TC engine in K1 Logistics’ FH 460 trucks features Volvo’s turbo compound technology, which gives I-Save the ability to drive at low engine rpm and high gears for longer periods of time. The Euro 6-compliant engine also produces 460 horsepower (338 kilowatts). Volvo’s I-Shift gearbox technology enables smoother gear changes and more efficient gear selection, while the I-See predictive cruise control technology continually surveys the road 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) ahead in order to optimise gear usage based on the topography.

    Drivers’ Favourite

The six new Volvo FH 460 trucks have fast become the top choice for K1 Logistics’ drivers. Each of the new units is equipped with Volvo’s Globetrotter cab, and two more identical Volvo FH 460s will soon join the fleet. With the vehicles expected to cover 120,000 km (74,565 mi) annually, the spacious interior of the Globetrotter cab makes the drivers’ lives easier.

“They tell me the FH 460 offers a much more solid drive than what we had previously,” says Evans. “The consensus is that it is simply a far more comfortable and enjoyable truck to work in.”
