As the wastewater specialist firm Universal Tanker Group has grown in recent years, expanding its fleet to more than 100 commercial vehicles, the solid back-up from Thomas Hardie Commercials has earned the company’s trust. In fact, Universal Tanker Group was so impressed with the dealer support from Thomas Hardie Commercials that the company ordered 38 new Volvo FMX rigid trucks, the first of which recently arrived.

“We’ve bought five companies over the past six years, acquiring lots of kit along the way,” says Universal Tanker Group Director Simon Gunn. “One of them ran Volvos, which we inherited, and the level of service we received from the dealership was second to none. We added our first two new Volvos, both tridems, around three years ago and we’ve come back to them in large numbers this time.”

    The New Tanker

The first new Volvo FMX is a 6x2 rigid equipped with a rear air suspension and a hydraulically steered tag axle. “The rear steer axle is so important for our line of work,” Gunn says. “It really is a super bit of kit and allows the driver to manoeuvre far easier when working off-road on rugged and busy construction sites. We’ve also opted for a high chassis height, which gives us excellent ground clearance.”

RTN Clayton Valley fitted a stainless-steel tanker and vacuum unit to the FMX, which is powered by Volvo’s 10.8 litre Euro 6 diesel engine that produces 380 horsepower (280 kilowatts) and 1,800 newton-metres (1,328 pounds-foot) of torque.

    High-Spec Day Cab

Universal Tanker Group added Volvo’s Drive and Media packages to the FMX day cab rigid to enhance its drivers’ time behind the wheel. Just a few of the packages’ extras include a 12-inch instrument display and 9-in. side display, allowing the driver to easily access navigation and media. To improve visibility, the dab cab also features a factory-fitted lower door window on the passenger side.
