Throughout its illustrious 106-year history, Lawton Tubes of Coventry has manufactured and distributed copper tubes and associated products, growing over that time to become the largest firm of its kind in the UK. To move products from the factory to its customers nationwide, Lawton recently acquired a Volvo FM 6x2 rigid, the first Volvo in the family-owned company’s fleet of 12 vehicles. Mounted with a SlidaFlex body, the truck is expected to log 115,000 kilometres (71,500 miles) each year, making six or seven deliveries per day to wholesale merchant traders and OEMs in the heat exchange and distillery industries.

“Our fleet delivers as far north as Inverness and as far south as Penzance, so driving performance and reliability are both paramount for us when we are choosing a new model,” says Managing Director – Operations, Giles Lawton. “This time around, we found that Volvo put forward the most competitive package in terms of vehicle availability, performance, and pricing. We’re very excited to put our new FM through its paces.”

    About The Volvo FM

The tag axle rigid has a Euro 6-compliant Step E diesel engine that produces 380 horsepower (280 kilowatts) and a peak torque of 1,800 newton-metres (1,328 pounds-foot). The FM is equipped with the I-Shift transmission, which applies precise gear changes through the constant evaluation of speed, weight, road grade, and torque demand. The V-shaped LED headlights automatically adjust to ambient light conditions. The truck also has electrically heated and operated rear view and wide-angle mirrors for improved visibility. For enhanced safety, the FM uses Lane Keeping Support and Lane Departure Warning systems as well as Forward Collision Warning and Emergency Braking technology.

“Our fleet delivers as far north as Inverness and as far south as Penzance, so driving performance and reliability are both paramount for us when we are choosing a new model,” says Lawton Tubes MD – Operations, Giles Lawton. (Photo courtesy of Volvo.)

The Globetrotter sleeper cab has a Single Bed Living package that has a lower bunk with a pocket-spring mattress, luxury sleeper control panel, a 28-litre (1-cubic-foot) wall-mounted fridge, and an air suspended driver’s seat. Drivers also benefit from a 12-inch fully dynamic instrument cluster and a 9-in. side display.
