Yorkshire Firm Puts UK’s First 120-Tonne Renault C520 Recovery Truck Into Action

Sparrow Recovery director James Sparrow says the firm is delighted with its new Renault Trucks C520 8x4 and plans to add more of the manufacturer’s trucks to its fleet down the line. (Photo courtesy of Renault.)

Family-owned recovery specialist Sparrow Recovery in East Riding of Yorkshire has added a Renault Trucks C520 8x4 truck to its fleet. Equipped with a Falkom FAW 25000 “powerhouse” wrecker recovery body with a heavy recovery crane, the truck is handling heavy-recovery tasks for customers throughout Yorkshire and Europe. Although the truck isn’t the first Renault-manufactured vehicle in Sparrow Recovery’s 35-vehicle fleet, Renault says it is the first 120-tonne (132-U.S.-ton) C520 recovery vehicle to operate in the UK.

“We operate a fleet of heavy-recovery vehicles and work with some highly demanding customers, so we only ever buy the best quality equipment,” says James Sparrow, Sparrow Recovery director. “For this vehicle we wanted a high-power 4-axle with a large GTW, strong running gear, and a nice cab. The Renault truck fills the bill perfectly; it has top-spec equipment with many additional extras making it a high-quality, very prestigious unit with a high residual value.”

    Built For Heavy-Duty Use

Renault builds its Range C trucks to tackle heavy recovery and other demanding jobs. This new C520 joins a Renault Trucks T520 tractor unit and four Master roadside service vans in Sparrow Recovery’s fleet. The company specified the C520 with numerous options in the sleeper cab to enhance driver comfort, including a luxury driver’s seat that’s heated and ventilated and has adjustable lumber support, a seat cushion extension, and dual armrests. Drivers also have extra cab storage at their disposal in the form of Maxispace lockers, a leather steering wheel with easy access to cruise control and mobile device control, and a performance lower bunk.

Helping the truck stand up to heavy-duty conditions is a 13-speed reinforced automatic Optidriver Xtended ATO 2613F gearbox with a crawler gear and five reverse gears including one extra-short-ratio gear. Maximum torque is 2,550 newton-metres (1,880 pounds-foot). The C520 also has an optional rear air suspension with eight bellows to produce a smoother, shock-free ride. A steel bumper with a heavy-duty towing pin, a 4-point air-suspended ride height control system, step lighting, and front fog lights are also on board to improve performance and driver visibility. Customers can also outfit Range C trucks with a steel front protective shield to take on demanding off-road conditions.

    A Look At C Trucks

Range C variants are available with 11- or 13-litre diesel engines rated from 380 to 520 horsepower (280 to 382 kilowatts). They can support a payload up to 28.8 t (31.7 U.S. t) and have gross vehicle weights ranging from 18 to 32 t (20 to 35 U.S. t). Along with LED lighting included to improve road lighting, safety-enhancing driver assistance technologies such as a line crossing warning, automatic emergency braking, and a parking brake emergency anti-rollaway feature are available.
