At a launch event held at the IFEMA exhibition centre in Madrid, Spain, IVECO introduced the first model in its new IVECO WAY lineup of heavy trucks, the S-WAY. When designing the new S-WAY truck, IVECO emphasised driver comfort, connectivity, and a lower TCO (total cost of ownership, but sustainability was also an important focus area. In fact, there is an S-WAY Natural Power model that runs on LNG (liquefied natural gas) and produces 99% lower PM (particulate matter) emissions, 90% lower NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) emissions, and 95% lower CO2 emissions.
Connectivity & Services
Connectivity is an important trend in the trucking industry, and the IVECO S-WAY uses the latest technologies to extend the life of the truck and improve the life of the driver. A connectivity box in the truck links it to Microsoft Azure’s cloud computing platform and, when used in conjunction with IVECO’s Control Room and Remote Assistance Service, it allows fleet managers to send over-the-air software updates, perform remote diagnostics, and monitor the health of the battery, brake pads, fuel filters, and other components to create a predictive, preventative maintenance plan.
IVECO also offers a series of mobile applications designed for fleet managers and drivers. One example is the MyIVECO app, which is also accessible via a web-based portal and has tools to help reduce fuel consumption, assist in driver training, and much more. For operators, the new MyIVECO EASY Way mobile app is a helpful tool that offers control over “all the cabin and vehicle management functionalities” as well as the ability to “activate the Assistance Non-Stop service and access the Remote Assistance Service,” IVECO adds.
Aerodynamic Design
The exterior design of the IVECO S-WAY reduces air resistance, improving aerodynamics to increase fuel efficiency by as much as 4%. The roof and front end are fully integrated to create a smoother surface that reduces drag, and everything from the grille, side fins, headlights, and bumper to the door, wheel arches, and side skirts are designed to close gaps and “create flowing lines that optimise airflow,” IVECO says. Other standout elements include the LED lights, one-piece side windows and rearview mirrors, and a newly designed door that “extends all the way down, leaving only the bottom step exposed,” the company adds. This combined with a mechanical door lock on the interior help improve the security of the S-WAY.
Cab Features
The S-WAY’s interior is designed specifically for long-haul operations. The adjustable seat features a thicker cushion for improved comfort, the steering wheel has a flat base that leaves more room for the driver, and the controls, including the 22 switches on the steering wheel, are all laid out ergonomically to reduce strain. The infotainment system has a 7-inch touchscreen display where you can connect your phone via Apple Car Play or Bluetooth and access the navigation system, DAB radio, and other features.
The cab has a 2.15-metre standing height at its centre, offering ample room to move around comfortably. There is also quite a bit of storage space, including a 1.5-litre bottle holder in the side door glove compartment, an upper shelf with a 250-litre capacity, and the option for outer boxes on the driver and passenger side, which can provide up to 375 litres of additional storage.
Other interior features include LED lighting throughout, options for refrigerators and cool boxes, integrated parking cooler and heater systems, and easy-to-reach controls near the bed module. The S-WAY comes standard with a T-shaped lower bunk that has two mattress options with thicknesses of 14 centimetres. There are also two upper-bunk options, including a 60-centimetre-wide bunk with an 8-centimetre-thick mattress and a 70-centimetre-wide bunk with a 10-centimetre-thick mattress.
