G. Headley Transport, a haulage specialist based in Manchester, recently purchased a new Volvo FH-540 tractor unit with a range of custom flourishes. The 6x2 tag axle truck, supplied by Thomas Hardie Commercials Ltd, features a D13K engine that produces 540 horsepower and 2,600 newton-meters of torque, as well as an I-Shift Dual Clutch automated transmission. It also has a Globetrotter XL cab, a 620-litre fuel tank, full air suspension, Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels, and a single reduction axle.
Custom Features & Upgrades
Among the custom features added to the FH-540 is a catwalk and polished side skirts produced by Burrow Fabrications, airbrush artwork by Kieran Davies, colour-coded paintwork from Irlam-based Wyke Commercial Services, and Kelsa LED light bars. Graeme Headley, joint managing director at G. Headley Transport, originally drove a Volvo FH16-750 truck before switching over to the FH-540. Headley was even able to visit Volvo’s Ghent-based plant to “see my new truck being built and roll off the production line.” The truck will operate all across the United Kingdom hauling bricks and blocks.
Reliable Service, Reliable Vehicle
G. Headley Transport’s new FH-540 is covered by a three-year Volvo Gold Service contract with Thomas Hardie Commercials’ location in Trafford Park handling repair and maintenance. So far, Headley is happy with the truck’s performance. “We have four Volvo trucks in our fleet of five vehicles. I’ve driven Volvos all my life and see no reason to change,” says Graeme. “I really wanted to try the I-Shift Dual Clutch gearbox, which is a superb system. The gear changes are seamless and make the engine feel like a 600-horsepower unit. It’s early days yet, but the fuel consumption figures are already 1.2 miles per gallon better than my previous 16-litre Volvo and that figure should improve as the engine beds in.”
