The Renault Optifuel Challenge final is being held today (16 October) in Lyon, France, and the winner of the driving competition will go home with a 2019 model year Renault Trucks T High 480 truck. This is the fifth edition of the event, which was created in 2012 and features 25 drivers from across Europe competing to find the best driver in the bunch. According to Renault, the Optifuel Challenge is “focused solely on rational driving” and “perfectly illustrates Renault Trucks’ global vehicle-driver-services approach to sustainably reduce fuel consumption from the very first kilometre.”
Optifuel Challenge International Final
The international final will includes two stages, with the first consisting of a questionnaire designed to test the drivers’ “knowledge of eco-driving principles and how to reduce fuel consumption,” Renault explains. The next stage involves a 40-minute, open-road driving test, with each driver operating a Renault Trucks T Optifuel powered by a 13-litre Euro 6 Step D engine.
The goal for the drivers is to maintain a proper commercial speed while consuming the least amount of fuel, and performance will be monitored by the Optifleet fleet management system. For the sake of fairness, there will be a random draw to set the order and “an additional vehicle will accompany each group of drivers to take into account traffic and any factors that may affect driving conditions,” Renault says.
