A Closer Look At The IVECO S-WAY Heavy-Duty Truck

IVECO expanded its lineup of heavy-duty trucks back in July with a new WAY range of 18-tonne or greater trucks. The range’s initial model, the S-WAY, is IVECO’s new heavy-duty flagship and is billed as a “100% connected, driver-centric long-haul” model. Designed specifically for long-haul operations, the S-WAY boasts an entirely new cab built from the ground up along with numerous design, connectivity, sustainability, safety, and other features that collectively provide greater driver comfort and greater logistics insight, cost savings, and lower total cost of ownership for operators. Here’s a closer look at the S-WAY.

IVECO’s new S-WAY heavy-duty truck uses a high-efficiency 12-speed HI-TRONIX automated transmission with electronic clutch, which IVECO says results in a best-in-class torque-to-weight ratio as well as long transmission oil change intervals. (Photo courtesy of IVECO.)

    The Nuts & Bolts

The S-WAY comes in several variants including AS and AT sleeper cabs and an AD short cab with low roof options. Power choices include diesel-based Euro VI/d-compliant FPT Industrial CURSOR 9, 11, and 13 engines from 330 to 570 horsepower with HI-SCR aftertreatment system and Natural Power models using CURSOR 9 NP and 13 NP engines running on LNG (liquefied natural gas) and using a three-way Catalyst aftertreatment system. One Natural Power model, IVECO says, produces 99% lower PM (particulate matter) emissions, 90% lower NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) emissions, and 95% lower CO2 emissions.

Elsewhere, the truck features a fuel-saving anti-idling feature and IVECO’s HI-CRUISE GPS predictive driving system with eco-roll, predictive gear shifting, and predictive cruise control features. The high-efficiency 12-speed HI-TRONIX automated transmission with electronic clutch, meanwhile, provides a class-leading torque-to-weight ratio and extended transmission oil change intervals, IVECO says.

Among other features, the cab of IVECO’s S-WAY heavy-duty truck features 2.15 metres of standup room, enabling drivers to easily move around the cab. (Photo courtesy of IVECO.)

    The Design

In February, the S-WAY’s design earned IVECO a 2020 iF Design Award, and even IVECO’s “I’m Unstoppable” video campaign for the truck’s launch won it two major advertising awards. IVECO Brand President Thomas Hilse says the iF award validated IVECO’s aim with the S-WAY to redefine the idea of “customer centricity” through design and current connectivity and automation innovations to provide “a complete solution that will make our customers and drivers unstoppable.”

The design improves the truck’s aerodynamics such that it provides a 4% fuel efficiency bump, IVECO says. Assisting are such features as rubber extensions on the side skirts, a reshaped roof that completely integrates with the front end, LED headlights, bumper, grille, side fins, and more all designed to enhance airflow. Elsewhere, a new door design that stretches downward so only the bottom step is exposed and an interior mechanical lock help improve driver security.

A completely redesigned cab with optimised airflow helped IVECO win a prestigious 2020 iF Design Award in the Automobiles/Vehicles category. (Photo courtesy of IVECO.)

    Comfort & Connectivity

The S-WAY’s many nods to better driver comfort include a standard lower bunk with multiple 14-centimetre-thick mattress options or two upper bunk bed options with 8-cm and 10-cm mattresses. There’s also an adjustable driver seat with more cushioning, 20-plus switches on the steering wheel for easy accessibility, 2.15 metres of standing cab space, ample upper shelf and other storage space, multiple fridge combinations, LED interior lighting throughout, and built-in parking cooler and heating systems. A 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display, meanwhile, integrates Bluetooth and voice recognition and can mirror a smartphone screen via Apple Car Play or Android Auto.

IVECO have built in a bevy of technologies in place to make driver operations as automatic and efficient as possible while introducing greater uptime, fuel efficiency, and lower TCO for operators. An integrated connectivity box, for example, ties into Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform to work with IVECO’s Remote Assistant Service and Control Room to enable remote diagnostics, wireless software updates, and component monitoring to provide predictive and preventative maintenance ability.

The MYIVECO Easy Way app gives S-WAY drivers greater control over cab and truck functions from a mobile device. (Photo courtesy of IVECO.)

IVECO also offers a new MYIVECO Easy Way app to control cab and truck functions via mobile devices and activate IVECO’s Assistance Non-Stop service and access diagnostics information. A MYIVECO web-based portal and app enable operators to view real-time fuel consumption and driving style data, as well as schedule service appointments to maximise uptime.
