DFDS, an international shipping company, recently added 27 new Volvo FH trucks to its fleet, including a mix of 12 FH 460s and 15 FH 500s. All of the vehicles are 6x2 tractor units with Globetrotter cabs, 12-speed I-Shift automated transmissions, and either 460- or 500-horsepower (343- or 373-kilowatt) D13K, Euro 6, Step D engines.

Volvo’s larger FH range includes a choice of five cab options, axle configurations ranging from 4x2 to 10x4, and a variety of six-cylinder engines that produce between 420 and 540 hp (313 to 403 kW) and from 2,100 to 2,800 newton-metres (1,549 to 2,065 pounds-foot) of torque.

Of the haulage firm’s most recent order, the dozen FH 460s will work at the Port of Immingham, while the other 15 FHs will be based at depots in either Aberdeen or Larkhall. All 27 trucks will be coupled with refrigerated trailers and transport seafood products around the UK and Europe, as well as for export through Heathrow.

    Support & Fleet Management

DFDS spec’d each of its new Volvo FHs with I-See predictive cruise control for improved fuel efficiency and opted for three-year Volvo Connect subscriptions that will also aid in reducing fuel consumption while also helping with safety reporting, remote tachograph data transfer, and much more. All of the trucks are also covered by three-year Volvo Gold Contracts, which will help keep the company’s trucks out of the shop and on the road. In fact, Volvo says this plan “provides the reassurance of a replacement truck or financial compensation in the event a time-consuming repair is ever required.”

    “A Unique Position”

“We are a major supplier of logistics services to Volvo Group, and are heavily involved in what goes into and comes out of the factories in both Gothenburg and Ghent,” says DFDS Fleet Manager Anthony Patterson. “That puts us in a unique position where we get to deliver our own trucks from the factory to the UK, but one where Volvo also secured the order entirely on merit. We couldn’t afford for anything less; we work our trucks intensely, 24/7, and product quality and reliability are paramount. We also get excellent driver feedback on the FHs, plus the service from the Volvo Trucks dealer network is consistently strong. It doesn’t matter where one of our trucks is, we get really well looked after.”
