Stewarts of Tayside, a family-owned business based in Perth, Scotland, that specializes in raspberries, strawberries, swede, and other fresh produce, recently purchased nine new Volvo FH 500s. They are all 6x2 tractor units with Globetrotter XL cabs and the Drive Plus package that adds full leather seats and a refrigerator/freezer combination under the bunk. Stewarts expects the vehicles to work seven days a week and travel roughly 160,000 kilometres (99,419 miles) each year, working alongside 30 other Volvos.
Eight & One
Eight of Stewarts’ new trucks are powered by D13K Euro 6 engines rated for 500 horsepower (373 kilowatts) and up to 2,500 newton-metres (1,844 pounds-foot) of torque; the ninth is a 44-tonne (48.5-U.S.-ton) FH with I-Save. The I-Save specification adds a D13TC Euro 6, Step D, turbo-compounding engine that increases fuel efficiency while also providing as much as 300 N-m (221 lbf-ft) of additional torque. That truck also benefits from I-See predictive cruise control, and all of the FHs are equipped with I-Shift automated transmissions.
Fuel Efficiency & Driver Satisfaction
“We’ve been looking to cut both our fuel costs and environmental footprint for some time and had heard positive things about the FH with I-Save,” says Jim Winn, transport manager at Stewarts of Tayside. “We choose vehicles that are going to be as efficient as possible for our line of work, so we’re excited to see the impact the I-Save model has. If it lives up to its reputation, then we will look to add more to the fleet the next time we upgrade. Driver satisfaction is hugely important for us. Our team are big Volvo fans and always commenting on how well they handle. Between the driving experience and the in-cab comfort, we’re confident our drivers will be really pleased with the latest additions.”
