Broughton Transport’s new 44-tonne (48.5-U.S.-ton) Volvo FH pusher axle tractor unit is expected to travel across Europe, as far from home as countries bordering the Black Sea, often for a fortnight at a time. The firm accordingly specified the truck for long-distance international work, including Volvo’s Globetrotter XL cab, two-bed resting package, driving plus package, and media package with infotainment.
“I’m of the firm opinion that it’s cheaper to spend money on a truck of this quality, which will retain the driver, than it is to buy less-desirable vehicles and suffer a high turnover of staff,” says Broughton Managing Director Toby Ovens.
Performance For The Long Haul
The new FH is powered by Volvo’s D13K diesel engine rated for 500 horsepower (375 kilowatts) and up to 2,500 newton-metres (1,844 pounds-foot) of torque. The low-emission, low-noise engine is Euro 6-compliant. The tractor unit also features Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift transmission which improves fuel efficiency, delivers smooth shifting, and reduces vibrations and operator fatigue. Broughton Transport specified the truck with multiple Volvo active safety features, including Lane Keeping Support, Lane Change Support, Driver Alert Support, and Adaptive Cruise Control.
Based On Driver Demonstration
It’s been more than 10 years since the last Volvo left the Broughton Transport fleet, yet the firm and drivers are well aware of the Volvo FH’s advantages. “One of our drivers regularly runs press test demonstrators, and so we know how good the Volvo product is from firsthand experience—and in particular how well it performs on fuel,” says Ovens. “Provided it lives up to expectations, I’m confident there’ll be more Volvos to come.”
