Crushing and screening contractor Paul Chapman & Sons works all over the UK and needed a heavy-duty truck to reliably transport its crushers, screeners, and other heavy machinery to jobsites around the country. When looking to replace an older Volvo FH16 650 6x4, the Derbyshire-based contractor returned to Volvo and found its new flagship truck.

“This new truck replaces an older model FH16 650 6x4 that we used for our low-loader work and was trouble-free and very reliable,” says Paul Chapman & Sons Managing Director Matthew Crofts. “We have a lot of Volvo construction equipment in the fleet, and we get great feedback on the product.”

    More Than 100 Tonnes

The company’s new flagship FH16 is designed for heavy haul work. Paul Chapman & Sons specified the tractor unit with a reinforced bogie, said to support gross combination weights above 100 tonnes (110 U.S. tons), and a four-axle Nooteboom trailer.

“We worked in conjunction with Volvo and the team at Hartshorne closely on the specification of the truck,” Crofts says. “SB Components installed and repositioned new fuel tanks to the rear of the cab but other than that all the work was done by Volvo, including the light bars, the colour scheme, everything.”

The new FH16 features Volvo’s Veiled Thistle Pearl colour; the haulier had its Nooteboom trailer painted to match.

“To have it delivered and see the vision come to life is just fantastic,” says Paul Chapman & Sons MD Matthew Crofts. “We couldn’t be happier with how it has all turned out.” (Photo courtesy of Volvo.)

    FH16 Power & Productivity

Paul Chapman & Sons’ FH16 draws power from Volvo’s 750-horsepower (560-kilowatt) D16K engine, which Volvo also makes available in 550- and 650-HP (410- and 485-kw) variants. The big engine generates 3,550 newton-metres (2,618 pounds-foot) of torque. Paul Chapman & Sons’ high-spec configuration is rounded out by Volvo’s I-Shift automated transmission with crawler gears, a key feature for manoeuvrability and startability during heavy-duty transport.

The firm also added Volvo’s Downhill Cruise Control function that sets a maximum speed, preventing the truck from going over set speeds when traveling downhill.
