Volvo Trucks recently set a new sales record for its heavy-duty electric trucks after it received an order from DFDS for 100 Volvo FM Electric tractor units. Not only is this order the largest commercial commitment for Volvo electric trucks to date, it’s also one of the largest ever for heavy-duty electric trucks. DFDS, a leading shipping and logistics firm based in Northern Europe, plans to use the trucks across short and regional transport deliveries in Europe.
Electric Truck Options
Volvo’s electric truck range has grown to include six models; the FH, FM, FMX, FE, FL, and VNR (sold in North America). The FM Electric is available as a tractor (4x2, 6x2, and 6x4) or rigid (4x2, 6x2, 6x4, 8x2, and 8x4) at gross combination weights up to 44 tonnes (48.5 U.S. tons). Heavy-duty haul range is estimated at 300 kilometres (186 miles), thanks to the truck’s 540 kilowatt-hour battery capacity. The FM Electric is rated for 330 to 490 kilowatts (450 to 666 horsepower), depending on battery and driveline configuration.
“Together we are showing the world that electrified heavy truck transport is a viable solution already today,” says Volvo Trucks President Roger Alm. “I believe this will encourage many more customers to confidently take the first step in their own electrification journey.”
Electric Truck Breakthrough
Volvo handed over the first FM Electric to DFDS in August; an additional 100 will start arriving in Q4 2022 and continue through 2023.
“At DFDS, we're determined to play our part in reducing CO2 emissions and creating a sustainable supply chain,” says Niklas Andersson, executive vice president and head of logistics division at DFDS. “We know how important electrification is in the journey to reach our CO2 targets, and I hope we can inspire others as we move forward in this vital transition.”
