Meet “Florence,” the new Volvo FH 540 Globetrotter 6x2 tractor unit that’s joined Shropshire-based Trevor Pye Transport’s fleet. Named after owner Trevor Pye’s granddaughter, the 540-horsepower (397-kilowatt) truck was purchased to honor company driver Chris Thomas’ 25 years of service. The truck was hand-painted in Trevor Pye Transport’s blue and red livery using a traditional style. The firm specified the truck with Volvo’s automatic 12-speed I-Shift gearbox, the Media package with navigation, and the Long Haul Fuel package. The latter includes I-See predictive cruise control, I-Cruise with I-Roll, and other driver-assistance and fuel-saving technologies.
“They have always produced a quality product, and when we decided to get something for Chris to celebrate his 25th anniversary, he was very clear in his choice,” says Pye. “His last truck was a 14-plate FH. He’s a Volvo man through and through.”
The Volvo FH
Volvo’s latest-generation FH has improved aerodynamics, is available as a tractor unit or a rigid, and comes with your choice of five cab options. Engine options run from 420 to 540 HP and generate 2,100 to 2,600 newton-metres (1,548 to 1,917 pounds-foot) of torque. Available fuel options include diesel, biodiesel, liquified natural gas (LNG), and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).
Trevor Pye Transport specified its FH with a one-bed Resting package that will give Thomas a premium driving experience. Package benefits include increased storage, interior lighting with adjustable reading lamps, and a roomy refrigerator designed for long-haul operations. The truck’s I-Shift technology continually gauges speed, load weight, road grade, and other information to automatically perform optimal speed and gear changes, helping reduce fuel consumption by as much as 5%.
A Dependable Addition
Trevor Pye Transport was established in 1984. The family-operated firm’s 15-truck fleet distributes fresh produce, groceries, seeds, and other goods. The FH is the first new Volvo truck the company has acquired in five years. Powered by a six-cylinder Volvo D13K Euro 6 engine, the FH will travel an expected 125,000 kilometres (77,671 miles) yearly running five days weekly.
“All the trucks are named after members of the family, and this one is grandchild number four,” Pye says. “Chris is very happy to say the least. The Globetrotter cab is always a hit, and we know we can count on Volvo to deliver a reliable truck, which is exactly what we need in our line of work.”
