ND Young Transport, haulier and sand and gravel merchant, utilises a fleet of 11 trucks to supply quarry materials to commercial and private customers throughout the UK. Logging high mileage transporting heavy loads creates hefty fuel costs, so when the Dorset-based company needed to replace one of its trucks, fuel efficiency was a major criterion. ND Young estimates its new Volvo FH 540 6x2 tractor until will save £7,600 per year over the truck from a rival manufacturer it replaced. The FH 540 is equipped with a Globetrotter XL cab and a Fruehauf bulk tipper trailer and will work five days a week, racking up around 80,000 miles (128,750 kilometres) per year on aggregate deliveries around the UK.

“The driver is averaging 8.27 mpg in this new Volvo and he was getting around 7.4 mpg from the 520-horsepower truck he has just come out of,” says Norman Young, owner of ND Young. “With diesel prices as they are, we’ll save around £7,600 each year in fuel. Obviously, we are delighted with that.”

    About The FH 540

The FH 540 is powered by a 540-HP D13K Euro 6-compliant engine with 2,600 newton-metres (1,917 pounds-foot) of torque along with Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift gearbox. The FH is packed with features to reduce fuel consumption. I-See uses high-resolution commercial topography maps to match braking and acceleration to the surroundings, anticipating hills in advance. I-Shift evaluates speed, weight, road grade, and torque demand to adjust shifting and the clutch for smooth changes.

“We have been using Volvos on and off since 1981. Over the years, we’ve tried most manufacturers but have now made the decision to stick with Volvo moving forward,” says proprietor Norman Young. (Photo courtesy of Volvo.)

The Globetrotter XL cab has the Drive+ and Living+ packages which provide features such as twin bunks, fully electric air conditioning, twin armrests on the driver’s seat, an adjustable steering wheel with neck-tilt, and rear cab upper storage. The FH 540 is also equipped with Alcoa Dura-Bright aluminium rims, a 33-litre refrigerator and freezer, a microwave, and a media package with navigation, and DAB radio.

“We have been using Volvos on and off since 1981. Over the years, we’ve tried most manufacturers but have now made the decision to stick with Volvo moving forward,” Young says.
