Colson Transport Rewards Long-Time Driver With Keys To Company’s New Volvo FH 16 Globetrotter

The longest-serving driver at Nottingham-based Colson Transport is now operating a new Volvo FH16 Globetrotter 6x4 tractor equipped with numerous extras in recognition of his years of service. The sustainable waste management and recycling services provider specified the FH16 with Volvo’s Drive+ package, for starters, which provides access to an upgraded dashboard, a digital 12-inch instrument display, leather upholstery, and a 33-litre (8.7-gallon) under-bunk-mounted fridge/freezer.

“The massive ground clearance is perfect for this line of work, and we’ve got just about every optional extra on there that you can think of,” says owner Ryan Colson. “The driver absolutely loves it. He’s been with me for 17 years, so we wanted to give him something special as a reward.”

    Ready To Collect

Colson Transport’s FH16 is equipped with a tipper trailer that’s used for muckaway applications performed across Nottinghamshire. Under the hood is a range-topping, six-cylinder Euro 6 D16K engine rated for 750 horsepower (550 kilowatts) that delivers 3,550 newton-metres (2,618 pounds-foot) of torque. The truck’s 12-speed overdrive I-Shift transmission includes construction and off-road software that assists with manoeuvrability during standstill starts and low-speed driving. An X-High chassis and a heavy-duty bumper constructed from 3-millimetre (0.1-inch) high-grade steel and partially coated with polypropylene also come in handy for the various jobsites and terrain the truck faces.

Colson also specified the truck with a host of safety-related features, such as adaptive high-beam headlamps that automatically disable certain segments of the LED high beam when encountering oncoming traffic or approaching a vehicle from behind. Also onboard are Downhill Cruise Control, which allows for setting a maximum speed to curb acceleration during downhill driving, and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which can work at all speeds down to 0 km/h.

    The Volvo FH16

The FH16 is also available as a rigid, and additional engine options include a 550-HP (405-kW) power plant that produces 2,800 N-m (2,065 lbf-ft) of torque, and a 650-HP (480-kW) engine generating 3,150 N-m (2,323 lbf-ft) of torque. Available chassis heights include Low (about 850 mm; 33.5 in.), Medium (about 900 mm; 35.4 in.), and High (about 1,000 mm; 39.4 in.). Additional cab options include sleeper, low sleeper, Globetrotter XL, and Globetrotter XXL.

“The business now runs around 80 tippers and grab lorries, more or less exclusively Volvo,” says Colson. “As far as I’m concerned, they are the best you can buy. Over the years, I’ve had most Volvo models you can imagine, and I’ve still got a couple of older FH16s in the collection. This latest version is fantastic, it looks great, and it delivers the performance and pulling power that you would expect.”
