M&M Greene Marks 40th Anniversary With New Mercedes-Benz 2563 Actros L GigaSpace

The special metallic-red exterior of M&M Greene’s new Mercedes-Benz Actros 2563 L boasts several nods to the firm’s Welsh heritage, with Wales’ heraldic dragon symbol and the word “Cymru” (“Wales” in Welsh) emblazoned across the front. (Photo courtesy of Mercedes-Benz.)

To mark the occasion of its 40th anniversary, South Wales haulier M&M Greene recently commissioned a new flagship 625-horsepower (460-kilowatt) Mercedes-Benz 2563 Actros L with a GigaSpace cab. Delivered by Euro Commercials of Swansea, the truck was destined to be a demonstration unit for the Mercedes-Benz truck dealer. That was until M&M Greene directors and brothers Mike and Mark Greene saw it at the Convoy Cymru truck show in May and made an offer onsite to buy it.

“We regularly participate in truck shows and always choose highly specified equipment,” says Mike Greene. “The latest Actros L has a definite ‘Wow!’ factor, though, even by our own standards. It ticks so many boxes on the options list and looks fantastic.”

    Welcome To The Family

Based in Gorslas in Carmarthenshire, M&M Greene provides general haulage services, including delivering jumbo sandbags and gravel. The Greene brothers established the company with their late father, Alan. The company is no stranger to Mercedes-Benz trucks, having acquired its first one in 2005. Its fleet now includes multiple Actros models and an Arocs 3245 K 8x4 tipper. Next year, Euro Commercials is set to deliver another Actros 2563 L.

Mark is driving the new Actros, which boasts a special metallic-red exterior and colour-coded bumpers and aluminum side skirts, a black grille, roof-mounted light bars, Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels, and a painted and polished full catwalk infill. To demonstrate the Greene’s Welsh pride, the firm’s livery includes Wales’ heraldic dragon symbol, the Prince of Wales three-ostrich-feathers motif, and the Welsh word for “Wales” (Cymru). “Yma O Hyd” is inscribed on the back wall in honour of the patriotic song that translates to “Still Here.”

    “A Huge Improvement”

The latest Actros is M&M Greene’s first with the safety-enhancing MirrorCam system, which replaces conventional mirrors and enhances visibility to the rear and A-pillar areas. Also onboard is Active Brake Assist 5 technology, which can apply the brakes if detecting pedestrians, and the Predictive Powertrain Control system, which Mercedes-Benz says can allow up to 5% fuel savings. The truck is equipped with a dual-screen Multimedia Cockpit dashboard, an automatic climate control system, luxury top bunk with levelling control, TV and DVD player, and pull-out fridge and microwave oven.

“We ran one of Euro Commercials’ demonstrators for a few weeks, before we put our own truck on the road,” says Mike Greene. “My brother says the cameras took a little bit of getting used to, but having done so, he reckons they’re a huge improvement. It’s definitely the way forward.”
