SugaRich Combats Food Waste With Help From Volvo FM Trucks

Surplus food reprocessing company SugaRich uses leftover materials from some of the largest food manufacturers, distributors, and retailers across the UK to produce and deliver high-quality, nutritional animal feed. To handle deliveries of collected surplus food products to its seven reprocessing mills, SugaRich recently acquired three new Volvo FM 500 6x2 tag axle tractor units for its expanding fleet. The company chose the Volvo trucks for the improved performance and visibility of the FM.

“Having had one or two issues with the aftersales support from our usual manufacturer, we were keen to get a new marque on board to ensure we always had the back-up we needed,” says Ryan Clay, national transport manager at SugaRich. “Volvo was the obvious choice as it is a quality product and we have been really impressed with the competitive price they were able to offer us and the support and guidance from the local dealer.”

    Brawn & Brains

The 44-tonne FM is powered by Volvo’s Euro 6-compliant D13K engine, which provides up to 500 horsepower (368 kilowatts) and up to 2,500 newton-metres (1,844 pounds-foot) of torque. The truck is equipped with the I-Shift automated 12-speed transmission, designed to improve safety and reduce fuel consumption. The FM has a fully digital dashboard with a 12-inch high-resolution instrument panel and a 9-inch side display for additional information pertaining to driving and loading, navigation, and tracking driver times and vehicle status. Side display functions can be controlled using the touchscreen, steering wheel control, dashboard control buttons, or voice control.

    More Space, Better Visibility

The Globetrotter cabs are three-star Direct Vision Standard-rated and have raised A-pillars to provide an additional cubic metre of space and improved lighting compared to the previous-generation cab. Visibility is enhanced by a combination of a large windscreen, low door line, modern mirrors, and the addition of a rear window.

SugaRich is pairing their FMs with roll-on, roll-off Cayvol skip trailers. “We probably use some of the biggest articulated skips in the UK and negotiating the collection can be tricky for the drivers. You have to be inch-perfect, so we went for the FMs as the visibility from the cab is so good.”
