Prompt Transport is in the process of upgrading its articulated fleet entirely to Volvo trucks, and the Bristol-based general haulage business recently took delivery of four new Volvo FH 460 tractor units.

“With these four latest arrivals, we are up to nine FHs and are planning to replace the remaining 12 tractor units we operate over the course of the next few years,” says Prompt Transport Director Lee Parker. “The drivers absolutely love them, and we are very happy with how the move has gone so far.”

    Fuel Economy Gains

All the Volvo FH trucks in the Prompt Transport fleet are equipped with Volvo’s Turbo Compound (TC) engines, and the new tractor units are fitted with the 460-horsepower (338-kilowatt) D13TC engines producing 2,600 newton-metres (1,918 pounds-foot) of torque. “The turbo compound engine has helped us unlock some great fuel savings—we’re around a mile and half to the gallon better off vs. the trucks we were running previously,” says Parker. “That’s a real boost for the business, both economically and in terms of reducing our carbon footprint.”

Prompt also spec’d its new Volvo FHs with the I-Save package for further increases in fuel savings. For example, the intelligent I-See software in I-Save works with Volvo’s I-Shift technology to manage the truck’s gear selection and speed, resulting in better fuel economy and faster shifting response. I-See’s predictive cruise control also adjusts to gradient changes in the road ahead using Volvo’s I-Cruise and I-Roll technologies.

    The Top-Tier Package

“We’ve really gone to town with the new trucks,” Parker says. “Inside they have the microwave, fridge freezer, basically everything we can add in there to make our drivers’ job that little bit easier. Then we’ve finished off the exterior with Kelsa spotlights, alloy wheels, and super single tyres.”

Prompt Transport’s drivers also benefit from Volvo’s Drive++ package, which includes electronic air conditioning with its own air quality sensor, twin armrests on the driver and passenger seats, and a Media package with navigation. To increase safety, Prompt Transport added the Visibility+ package that provides amenities like LED headlights that adapt to ambient light conditions, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, and electronically heated rearview mirrors.
