Scania Introduces Six-Wheel LNG-Powered Tractor With A Centre-Lift Axle

Scania has unveiled a new three-axle tractor unit powered by liquid natural gas (LNG) and biogas. The 6x2/2 tractor is equipped with a lightweight Hendrickson lift axle between its front and rear axles.

The new offering joins two-axle LNG and compressed natural gas (CNG) units in Scania’s tractor range. The company also fields two- and three-axle rigids that can run on LNG or CNG. All of the above can operate on 100% biogas as well.

"The addition of a six-wheel LNG tractor unit to our gas vehicle range is an exciting step forward as it opens up new opportunities for biogas-fuelled long distance haulage," says Scania (Great Britain) Limited’s UK Sales Director, Vincente Connolly. "While the actual range will be dependent upon a variety of operational factors, our trials have shown that distances in excess of 400 miles are achievable."

    Engine Options

The new LNG tractor has two fuel tanks. The offside unit has a 187-litre (49-gallon), 73-kilogram (160-pound) capacity at 10 bar, and the nearside tank holds up to 313 L (82.6 gal) and 122 kg (270 lbs) of natural gas.

Scania offers a pair of Euro 6 gas engine options in a total of three levels of performance. Its 9.3-L, inline five-cylinder engine comes in a 280-horsepower (206-kilowatt) version with 1,350 newton-metres (996 pounds-foot) of torque at 1,900 rpm, as well as a 340-HP (250-kW) edition that produces 1,600 N-m (1,180 lbf-ft) at the same engine speed. Scania’s 12.7-L, inline six-cylinder gas motor is good for 410 HP (302 kW) and 2,000 N-m (1,475 lbf-ft) of torque, also at 1,900 rpm. All three power plant options curb their emissions using EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and a three-way catalyst.

    Biogas-Capable

In keeping with Scania’s support for renewable fuels, its LNG and CNG commercial vehicles are also compatible with biogas. Biogas reduces carbon dioxide emissions by up to 90%, the company says.

"While Scania offers the widest range of alternatively fuelled vehicles on the market today, biogas is very much a 'here and now' solution,” Connolly says. “That's because our approach is reinforced and supported by the UK's growing biogas refuelling infrastructure, which is enabling more and more operators to embark upon their sustainability journeys immediately and with no additional investment."
