Haulier ELB Partners does a lot of work in Greater London, so it only made sense for the Croydon-based firm to specify its latest fleet additions to conform with London’s three-star Direct Vision Standard. The eight new Volvo FM 460 6x2 tractors also feature advanced safety features, including the latest collision avoidance and lane departure warning systems, as well as Volvo’s Visibility+ package with V-shaped LED headlights and rain-sensing windscreen wipers.

“These tractors are a perfect fit for urban delivery; they’re just so easy to drive in the city,” says ELB Partners Managing Director Peter Eason. “Their low cab combined with the numerous cameras and sensors we’ve added grant us a clear view of all our surroundings. It all helps our drivers to spot and avoid any potential hazards; plus it’s a great working space to help attract and retain the best drivers.”

    The Volvo Experience

The new FM 460 tractors are expected to cover 160,000 kilometres (99,400 miles) annually with nearly constant use (20 hours a day) during the work week. With such demanding job requirements, ELB Partners favours the reliable, high-quality designs from Volvo for its hauling services.

“We’ve been a Volvo customer for many years— 80% of our fleet is Volvo—so when it came to choosing our new fleet there was only one marque on the table,” says Eason. “In our experience, Volvo’s build quality has always been second to none, and the array of safety options on offer will help keep our drivers, customers, and other road users safe.”

    More On The FM 460

Volvo also makes the FM available in rigid formats and in six cab options; ELB Partners selected the comfortable Globetrotter cab for its tractor units. The Euro 6 D11 and D13 diesel engines available for the FM have 330- to 500-horsepower (246- to 372-kilowatt) power ratings, and the 460-HP (343-kW) engines on the FM 460 tractors produce 2,300 newton-metres (1,696 pounds-foot) of torque. Other versions of the FM run on LNG, biodiesel, and electric power. ELB Partners also configured their new fleet additions with Volvo’s long-haul fuel economy package, which includes technologies like the I-Shift automated mechanical transmission for easier and safer driving, and Volvo’s Engine Brake system to increase safety while reducing wear on the brakes.
